How To Reduce Cholesterol Without Medication?

I am a 60 year old female. Just found out my cholesterol number is 310. HDL=64 LDL-210 and TRIG=110. I have been active (a runner) most of my life with a normal weight (130 lbs. at 5'4") About 3 years ago I had major foot injury (posterior tibial tendon rupture) had surgery with a pretty long recovery time. I have gained 45 lbs. I have also had palpations my whole life, I'm told not dangerous, but they do feel that way sometimes. My question is: can I safely lower my cholesterol, and risk of heart attack without medication? I am willing to do anything ie: diet and exercise etc. I have so much anxiety around this issue right now. Every day I think I'm about to have a heart attack.

As per the information provided, you are a 60yrs old lady, presently overweight, with deranged lipid profile (Total cholesterol 310 mg%, LDL 210 mg%) and a history of palpitation (prolonged).
First and foremost, it is very difficult to reduce this level of cholesterol to the acceptable range, without medications. Of course, diet and exercise regime will definitely cause some improvement, but may not reduce the level to the desirable range. Ideally, the total cholesterol level should be below 200mg% and the LDL should be less than 120 mg% (some physicians prefer less than 100 mg%). I must tell you that please do not be apprehensive regarding the cholesterol lowering agents (they predominantly safe). Infact, if your cholesterol levels remain persistently high, it may predispose you to coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome (heart attack). You can get a baseline ECG done, to rule out any existing cardiac problems.
Regarding the dietary modifications you must avoid Saturated fat (like butter), refined carbohydrate (like fast food) and carbonated beverages. Avoid canned and preserved food. A diet with high content of fibre is beneficial. Please quit smoking, in case you are a smoker. Weight reduction through a daily exercise regimen (even brisk walking) may help. Since, you have had palpitations for some time, i would advise you to get your hemoglobin and thyroid profile checked.
