How To Reduce Bruising And Swelling?

I fell down some stairs on NYE last year. I had terrible bruising and swelling but no break or fracture. It is 10 months later and the swelling in the area is still very noticeable. I had one doctor tell me to leave it and it would go away on its own. Another say to heat and massage it to break it up. Please advise.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain bruising and swelling after physical trauma seems to be due to ruptured blood vessels leading to Hematoma formation and bruising at the site and the area surrounding the injury..
Swelling occurs as there is also accumulation of inflammatory exudate and cells and also the damaged tissue fibres and blood vessels in the area of the injury and the hematoma is at times localized by these structures leading to formation of a hard and firm lump and it can take months for it to resolve..
You should do alternate warm and cool compresses over the lump..
You can apply a Heparin containing ointment over the site for faster disruption of the Hematoma..
If there is pain take Ibuprofen..
While lying down keep your leg elevated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
