How To Proceed With This Result Of MRI For Knee Pain?

I am a 51 year old lady. Had knee pain for around a week. Went to an ortho who after initial X-ray examination asked for MRI to be done. Mri reveals grade 3 chondromalacia in the median ridge mid patella and sub chondromalacia changes, left knee joint effusion and mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament What are the non surgical options or is arthroscopic surgery the only way to cure this

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

I would recommend arthroscopy as grade 3 chondromalacia will only progress exposing the bone and then resulting in pain, swelling and restrictions in mobility. Thus it would be best to go about an arthroscopy, which is hardly even surgery and you should be out of the hospital in no time. After this, certain physiotherapy and exercises will be recommended, but do not strain your knee too much.

Best wishes.
