How To Handle Anxiety In Alcoholics?

Hi am an extreme alcoholic with panic attack and anxiety. I don t handle change and curtain situations very well, I used alcohol to deal socially. I am one day out of detox and have to take a family cruise and fly across country very soon. I am not on meds right now and I am really starting to freak about the whole thing. This is my family first vacation like this, I don t want to ruin this for them. What can I do?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You have been taking heavy alcohol and have anxiety and panic disorder. It is common in alcoholics to have severe panic disorder. Some times withdrawal from alcohol further aggravates the condition. I would advise you to please visit a psychiatrist for proper treatment and evaluation. Stop using alcohol first and take proper treatment. Benzodiazepines drug like Lorazepam or Chlordiazepoxide etc are commonly used to prevent withdrawal from alcohol and prevent the anxiety and panic due to alcohol abuse. For proper treatment of anxiety medicines like SSRIs can be used. These medicines help to reduce the frequency of anxiety attacks and help to reduce the symptoms. Pregabalin or Gabapentin can also help in reduction of craving of alcohol and anxiety. Please visit a psychiatrist for proper treatment and prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
