How To Get Rid Of Trouble Passing Urine After Hernia Repair?

Hi is it usual to have trouble passing urine and needing a catheter after a hernia repair. I have had a leg bag for a week and am now self catherterising three times a day. What is the accepted amount of urine to retain if any? Can the problem be caused by an enlarged prostate? Thank you

Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

I understand your concerns and will try to advice as soon as possible.

After hernia repair, with spinal anesthesia it is common for patients, most of the times, male patients to need cathetherisation when they have problems with prostate.
Correct me if i am wrong, but what do you mean with "and i am now self catherterising three times a day"? Do you mean that by yourself you put a cathether in your urethra 3 times a day? If so you need to stop doing it. Chathether needs to be inserted by a professional and trained person (nurse, doctor) in sterile conditions. There are heavy consequences from UTI to rupture of urethra,or hematuria from damaging the prostatic urethra ect.
Also if a patients needs a cathether, it needs to stay there ,without removing it for about 7 to 10 days because his urethra needs time to repair itself from the scaring that the cathether cause to it.

Yes enlarged prostate can block your bladder to be emptied, but for that you need to do some test first to confirm the diagnosis. Ultrasound of your prostate ,blood tests like PSA (prostate specific antigen) ,and a check up with an urologyst.

If you have other questions, feel free to contact me.
