How To Cure Perioral Dermatitis On Sides Of Mouth And Around Nostrils?

I have perioral dermatitis on my sides of my mouth and around my nostrils, I was prescribed topical metronidazole cream which has worked for me in the past. I started the cream a few days ago and the rash is getting worse not better. I cannot remember if this is normal. Thank you for any help

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

Perioral dermatitis is a common side effect of using potent steroid on the face, however the cause cannot be discerned in many patients.

Perioral dermatitis or snuffles responds very well to oral Tetracyclines like Doxycycline, Minocycline Or Macrolides like Erythromycin.

I would advice that you continue with Metronidazole gel as before along with Doxycycline 100 mg twice daily. Doxycycline may be required to be continued for 3-4 months, well after satisfactory response.

Use a mild cleanser for face wash e.g cetaphil.

Avoid using everything else on your face like sunscreens, mositurizers etc.

regards
