General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Kumaran,
Thanks for the query.
Gout is caused by excess uric acid crystal that get deposited in joints
especially larger joints.

Primary gout occurs when there is no medical condition that impairs uric
acid secretion. This is common in individuals who have a family history of
gout.

Secondary gout occurs when there is an underlying medical condition and treatment in such cases is based on controlling the underlying medical condition.

In your case, giving your age, it is more likely that you have a primary gouty attack. In such case strict measures are necessary else, recurrence will be inevitable.

True, you need to reduce the protein food especially meat and dairy products. Alcohol in all forms; beer, whisky etc should be avoided. Intake of much water each day will also greatly help.

Hope this helps. If you have further query, i will be glad to help.
Best regards
Dr Achuo
