How To Control An Overactive Bladder?

My Dad 82yrs old has been treated for cancer urinary bladder by surgery and bcg instillation in 2008. In 2011, he developed recurrence in the neck of the bladder. TURP was also done. Following this surgery, he developed overactive bladder and has been on suprapubic catheter since then. Moreover, inspite of changing his catheter every 3 weeks, he has urinary tract infections. Kindly let me know if his overactive bladder is treatable and how to control his frequent uti.

Hello,

Recurrent UTI is itself due to foreign body (catheter) in the bladder. For controlling that:
• Plenty of liquids to maintain hydration
• Cranberry sachet once daily for 5 days in a week
• Prophylactic antifungal agents every month
• Citrus fruits with chewable vitamin C supplements
• Control of blood sugar, keeping him ambulatory
• Treat any infection with culture sensitivity and complete the course of antibiotics every time
• Permanent cure in terms of urinary diversion into colon or ileal conduit to get rid of suprapubic catheter is a big decision to be discussed thoroughly with oncourologist

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
