Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 87 yrs. old and 10 lbs. (least - l53 lbs. and 5ft. 1/4 tall) overweight . I feel that my problem is like that of an alcoholic as I am addicted to sweets. The Dr. says to eat only one cookie . He doesn t know that there is no such thing as one cookie. I eat all the things I should but must have that sweet at the end of a meal. I don t know where to turn anymore for help. Any suggestions are most welcome.
You seem to have a very common problem. Most of us are addicted to sweets. The only way to look at it is whether we want to live healthily or not. From your history, as you have not commented on Diabetes mellitus, I would assume you are free from most of the chronic diseases. Try going for non-calorie sweets like sugar free ones. There is no other way I can think of. One important think though is If you walk on a treadmill for 1 hour, you might spend maximum of 100 calories, whereas a sweet can be more than 400 calories. Think of how much work needs to be done to spend those extra calories.
Being a elderly, difficult to suggest anything else. Both you are your doctor are right. In view of your health think about it. If you have any chronic diseases, we have to think strictly about it.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help
