How To Confirm Lung Cancer?

Baring in mind my dad nearly 83 and to cut a long story short, he has had CPOD for years has took 3mg Prednisolone for around 10yrs has emphysema had two lung biopsy’s in 2011 and it was thought it was the prostate and kidneys after second biopsy so a catheter was inserted and has been fine. Recently he has gone downhill sleeping, not eating and lost 2 stone. First it was fluid on the lungs then chest infection and upped steroids to 30mg per day but had to be admitted to hospital as he was so week. One consultant thought advanced prostate cancer spreading to mets. But that seems ok now (no biopsy done but doing bone scan next weeks) the diagnosis’s was Sepsis in hospital and scan revealed kidneys ok as expected and very enlarged prostate as expected and cists on the liver but was told not to worry about them. He now has a letter to see consultant at the general medicine clinic and the chest xray the was to be reviewed by a chest specialist as they think tumours on the lung. My dad has constant ache in the left shoulder blade and both sides lower back and is just taking around 6 paracetamol per day with his other tablets but is eating again I now have received another letter saying my dad’s x ray shows bi-basal shadowing on the lungs Could this possibly be lung cancer this time or may be the primary and there is secondary. I know you can’t confirm nothing and not stupid that I know dad is too old and week to have treatment but I wish someone would just explain a few things instead of messing me about. Is bi-basal pneumonia or lung cancer??? Sorry a log question Thanks Amanda

Hi

For finding out the primary site of cancer i would suggest immunohistochemistry test on the biopsy sample. If TTF1 is positive then it indicates lung cancer.
The fluid cytology can also be checked in the fluid accumulated in his lungs.
Lastly i would advise he does Whole body PET CT scan to determine the sites of tumor.
