How Safe Is To Take Prevacid While On Diet?

I am a 62 year old white female and have started dieting to lose 100lb. I exercise when I can and stay between 1500-2000 calories/day. I take Prevacid 15mg/bid/and have for about 10yrs. I have tried to discontinue but pain in the duodenum always returns. I also take Diovan 80mg/day, Meloxicam 15mg/day, multi vitamin, coQ10 200mg/day, calcium-magnesium, b12, bcomplex, vitamin c 1000mg/bid, and glucosamine/chondroitin.

My question is, why do I get so ravenously hungry and shaky at the same time? My blood sugar ranges from 80-90 and recent blood tests revealed normal cholesterol/triglycerides and normal levels of the panel performed. When I do get this hunger, I get sweaty and extremely shaky. If I don't have breakfast, I feel fine - but if I eat what I consider a substantial breakfast around 7:30am, within 15minutes I'm ready to eat the side of a barn! I'll have something else but that doesn't seem to work. I'm getting very frustrated. Any suggestions?

Welcome to HCM,
My lady you have so many things going on there. Here you are focusing on Prevacid (which by the way can cause osteoporosis in the long run so make certain you eat enough dairy or supplement with calcium. Now the Meloxicam works exactly in opposition to Prevacid and can cause the very symptoms Prevacid is being given to treat.Avoid garlic, ginger, ginkgo and horse chestnut with this drug to decrease chance of side-effects.

For breakfast, it might depend on what you eat. Stay away from easily absorbed carbohydrates that will mess with your insulin, like juice. Have a significant source of protein in the am. Learn about high glycemic carbohydrates and try to stay away from them.

Small, frequent meals or 3 meals and snacks may alleviate the feelings of low blood sugar. Gradually increasing your fiber should help with the hunger problems. Also avoid all food commercials as they too will increase your insulin.

High insulin is most always present in those who are overweight and it makes it more difficult to lose that weight.

So, try some Greek Yogurt and a small bowl of oatmeal and see if that doesn't make a difference in the am. Greek yogurt has about 12 grams of protein per serving. Oatmeal is high in water soluble fiber which helps quench the appetite for longer periods of time.

Good luck and I hope things work out for you. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
