How Safe Is The Combination Of Cymbalta And Abilify?

Thank you but I think I will wait until I see my PCP. You did help, simply by giving me a forum. My question is how two of my meds are being prescribed. My dr put me on 30mg Cymbalta then up to 60mg after one week and now I just started 90mg. He wants me to add Abilify after 7 days. I just heard about some of the really bad side effects of Cymbalta. Normally I don t read the warning sheet as I don t want to then become a side effects watcher. I just know about changes in my body. 1) How safe are these two meds, especially at the levels and combined. I am also on, hoping to soon get off, Ativan, Ambien, Norco. 2) I already have what I call heeby-jeebies where without warning my legs, arms, hands, whatever, suddenly twitch hard and fast. I usually end up on the floor. Also have twitchy speech, trouble swallowing. Knowing this, should Cymbalta have been prescribed?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
This response is from a different physician. I neither know what your previous question was nor its answer. Moving on
1) Cymbalta is a drug that we generally use in patients with psychiatric conditions as a mood stabilizer or in patients with chronic pain for conditions such as fibromyalgia. My guess here is that you are being treated for fibromyalgia. It is an effective drug and often used when primary drug therapies such as Ativan. Ambien or Norco are no more providing you relief from pain.
2) The reason why your doctor increased the doses gradually is because there is no fixed dose for this drug. It acts by controlling neurotransmitter release in your central nervous system. The amount of drug needed might differ for each and every individual. So what we do is that we gradually increase the dose and when the patient finds relief or feels the effect of the drug we stabilize the dose.
3) The sudden twitching of your extremities can also be a result of your underlying CNS or rheumatological illness. It is normal for a doctor on Cymbalta under these circumstances.
4) Abilify belongs to the same class of drug as Ativan. Abilify is a bit more effective. This might be one of the reason for your doctor to consider starting you on it.
5) Ambien (Zolpidem) is a drug that helps you sleep and Norco is again a codeine analgesic. If you feel that your pain and sleep is well controlled by the above drugs Cymbalta and Abilify there is no reason for you to continue taking them.
Hope you found the answers you were looking for.

Dr. Manoj Pradeep MD
