How Safe Is Taking Tegretol Instead Of Trigeminal Neuralgia?

I have just started on Tegretol 100 mg bid for Trigeminal Neuralgia. It seems to wear off a few hours before the next dose. I am wondering if I could take 100 mg tid instead. Also, as long as the medication is able to control the pain is it necessary to have an MRI to know exactly what is causing it or not?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Tagretol is Carbamazepine and the drug is the treatment of choice for trigeminal neuralgia. In most of individuals the drug results in improvement of condition. You have been taking the drug in doses of 100 mg twice a day and still the pain is persisting so in my opinion the doses should be increased. Doses can be increased to 100-200 mg tds without any fear. The drug is safe to use and helps to control the pain of TN (Trigeminal neuralgia). Please discuss with your doctor before making any change in prescription.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
