How Safe Is Taking Nexium 40 For GERD?

Good morning: Diag.with GERD about 1 year ago. Nexium 40. about a month ago chest pain came back, milder though. All through have had an oversensative throat, cough at the least thing, even sometimes just taking a breath, it seems, that often, what goes down, somehow "clips" my windpipe and the coughing begins, for about 3-4 mins. then it creates clean mucus, which in turn creates more coughing, which leaves me with a constant sensative throat. A vicous circle I think. How can I stop the circle? I would really somehow like to get off of Nexium or at least reduce the dosage. I hate the thought of taking it "forever".
Thanks. DVK

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

GERD is caused due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Nexium (pharmacologically Esomeprazole) which prevent acid formation in stomach+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux).

In addition you need to follow certain diet & lifestyle measures, such as:
1. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised. Avoid stress.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.

Wishing a good health.
Take care.
