How Safe Is Taking Methotrexate For Ectopic Pregnancy?

I am pregnant and have been diagnosed with an assumed optopic pregnancy. My doc wants me to take one very low dose of methotrexate to help move things along. My only problem is that I have a 6 month old that I am nursing. My question is if my height it 5"0 and my weight is 113lbs how long do you think it will take for the one dose to leave my system? Do you think I could pump and dump and resume nursing within a month or so? Please let me know. Thanks you!

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The recommendation regarding women on Methotrexate for cancer chemotherapy is waiting 1 week after cessation of therapy. However, the low one-time dose used for treatment of ectopic pregnancy is not regarded as being harmful. I personally believe the safest thing would be to discard your milk for one week after the injection.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
