Hallow Dear,

Cervical encirclage is a procedure by which a stitch is taken around the cervix (mouth of the uterus) to strengthen it. The stitch taken is removed just before the labour stats - any times between 37 to 39 weeks of pregnancy.

If the cervix is week (incompetent cervical os), then the pregnancies are lost after 14 weeks of gestation since the cervix cannot bear the weight of the baby. Such cases have a typical history of repeated midtrimester abortions. The remedy for this condition is very simple and easy - cervical encirclage.

Your history is suggestive of Incompetent cervical os. The diagnosis can be confirmed by ultrasonography either between the pregnancies or during the pregnancy also. If it is incompetent os, cervical encirclage will be indicated.

Some people advice cervical encirclage in non-pregnant state; however, it may lead to infertility. Hence this surgery should be done during pregnancy, that too after 14 weeks of pregnancy (in the midtrimester).

After this procedure, you should not lift heavy weights and have rest, at least for 2 hours during day and 8-10 hours during night in lying down position. This will prevent the pressure of the baby on the stitch and the cervix.

It is a very simple and still a very effective procedure to prevent the miscarriages due to incompetent os. Therefore, if the diagnosis is confirmed by ultrasonography, please do not hesitate to get it done. It will save your pregnancy.

So rest assured about the safety of this procedure.

I hope this will help you.
