How Long Will Residual Dark Skin Pigmentation Take To Heal?

Dear Doctor, I am a Chinese from Singapore. 9 days ago, i had a chemical burn on a patch of skin on my face due to the use of pure tea tree oil soaked cotton wool. I have consulted local dermatologist who diagnosed it as first degree or superficial second degree burn. I was prescribed bactroban. There were no blistering, but only darkened brown skin which falls off over the first 4 days. It seems that the wound has healed, but it still has the burnt out look. I would like to ask the approximate amount of time I should give the skin to recover and stabilise fully before I can consider using other products such as hydroquinone to remove darker pigmented areas. I have a fair skin, so the colour difference is very obvious and it is lowering my self esteem. Thank you.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have residual dark skin pigmentation which is due to clogging of skin pores with sebum and bacteria and overproduction of melanin pigment under the skin. It could be due to other trigger factors also like hormonal changes and some underlying disease. Need not to worry. Do not expose yourself to sun while melacare on your face. You should start with melacare as it is very effective as it contains hydroquinone, tretinoin and steroid. You should use it at night, wash it in the morning and apply sunscreen. I would suggest you to consult dermatologist ,Doctor may prescribe you other creams like creams containing kojic acid and azelaic acid which are more safer and effective as far as hyperpigmentation is concern. It will take 4-6 weeks to heal completely. For more severe case treatment like laser therapy and chemical peel are also available.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
