How Long Will I Feel The Pressure And Fluid In My Ear?

After having severe ear pain I went to an urgent care clinic and was diagnosed with an ear infection in both ears six days ago. I have completed a course of Azithromycin which was 4 days along with Cetirizine for the past six days. The pain left after the first day on the prescriptions but I can still feel the pressure and fluid in both ears. How long should it take for this to clear? Is there anything else I could do to speed things along?

Hi,thank you for posting you query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms, you suffered from bilateral ear infection .Your pain got relieved after taking Antibiotic Azithromycin and Antihistaminic-Cetrizine.But you still feel fluid in both ears.

It happens after middle ear infection, that even if the infection gets controlled due to antibiotic relieving the pain, still in some patients, fluid remains collected in the ears. This is mostly due to Eustachian tube blockage(It is a tube connecting the middle ear with nose and is responsible for equalization of middle ear pressure with the outer atmospheric pressure. In case of tube blockage,it leads to negative middle ear pressure which may lead to fluid collection in middle ear).

You may find relief by taking Oral Decongestant(like Phenylephrine) and Nasal Decongestant drops like Xylometazoline-if you are not suffering from hypertension and a mucolytic like Ambroxol.

Also do steam inhalation.Avoid cold, very sweet food, dairy produts, etc which increase mucus production.Avoid dust, smoke and other pollutants.Drink lots of fluids(warm) as it helps in break down and release of collected secretions.

It may take upto 4 weeks to relieve this problem. If you still feel fluid collection in the ear,it would be advisable to consult an Otolaryngologist Doctor.Minor surgery like a small nick over your ear drum and release of collected fluid from middle ear might be needed.

Hope this answers your query.Take care.
