How Long Does Viral Meningitis Take To Alleviate?

My 19 year old son was diagnosed with viral meningitis over 10 days ago and although he is showing signs of improvement he is still poorly. Raised temperature with headaches and generally feeling unwell. Sleeping a lot. It s now over 3 weeks since his symptoms first started. Two days in hospital with lots of tests including lumbar puncture. Need reassurance that his illness isn t turning into something else. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It can take 2 to 4 weeks to recover completely from a serious infection. The fact that he is showing some improvement is good, this trend should continue once he continues with any treatment that was recommended.

If there was no improvement in symptoms then this would be a problem.

I hope this helps
