How Long Does Recovery From Sinus Surgery Take?

I had sinus surgery last week. The doctor said he removed a bag of pus from my maxialliary area. He said it was a result of a tooth I'd had problems with in the past. A doctor did allow my molar to drain pus in a three week span two years ago. I've had problems with that and another tooth a dentist prepared to put a bridge inside my mouth over fifteen years ago. The bridge had always give me trouble and was removed on an emergency basis in 2005. The infection was going to my brain. I still don't understand how the dentist who drained my problems tooth a few years ago did not refer me to an ear, nose and throat doctor back then. I'd given him the history of the removal of the bridge. I was told to spend a week at home to recover this surgery. I am currently having pain in the area the doctor worked on. Can you tell me how much recovery time I will have before the pain begin to leave. I am so anxious. I am looking forward to feeling better though, even though I'd undergone many years of pain and am not sure of the magnitude of the suffering it has caused me. Another question is, how come the antibiotics never did any good in the past. I do know that I had significant drainage as soon as I would lay down each night. Was this pus that I was swallowing each night? Thank you.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms you had a long standing case of sinus infection and when any infection or disease is treated when it is in severe form then the treatment will also take a longer time to heal the infection..
As it is just one week when you have got the surgery done, pain after one week is not an abnormal finding and you need to take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and swelling.
A course of antibiotics like Augmentin is also advisable.
Saline nasal spray has t be taken as it helps in easy draining of fluids fom sinus and ease in congestion and breathing and relieve pressure and pain..
Avoid snuffing nose ..

Antibiotics could not help as once the infection leads to us accumulation in the sinus and it is thick it will not resolve easily and needs draining..
The drainage that you experienced while lying down at night is a mixture of pus and nasal secretions and inflammatory fluid due to inflammation in the sinus lining due to infection..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
