How Long Does Afrin Nasal Spray Stay Active In The System?

Hi, had a question for you? I have been on Afrin nose spray for years I really want to try to get off it. So I heard from someone to stop taking the Afrin and start using Nasacort which has steroid in it. How long would it take my congestion to clear up from the Afrin. Thank you, Jeannette

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi thanks for asking question.

You are taking oxymetazoline decongestant to relieve your congestion.
Usually during common cold for nasal blockage relief it is taken for 4 to 5 days.

Long term use of it avoided.

If condition severe then azelestine antihistaminic nasal spray can be taken.

For relief of congestion take steam inhalation.

Drink more water.

Cetrizine like antihistaminic drug can taken.

Garlic , onion , ginger is good herbal remedy that can be used.

Mostly your congestion will be relieved within few days.

If no benefit then chest x ray and CBC done.
Accordingly it can be treated by antibiotic.

I hope you will understand my concern.
