How Long Can HIV Take To Get Detected?

my partner has been tested every three months for the past several years and has always been negative. A few weeks ago he was called and asked to come in due to results of second test. He swears the counselors have told him the virus can go undetected for up to seven years. Nothing I have read supports this. If one has tested negative repeatedly over a couple years is it possible that detection today could be for infection years agp?

Hi,
Welcome.
Your partner's understanding is not correct. If HIV tests remain negative after 6 months of high risk contact, he is not having any HIV disease and never becomes positive here afterwards without a fresh risk. HIV positive individual may be likely to remain symptom free for up to 7-10 years or more, but the individual's blood test would reveal the infection within 3 months by a positive test.
