Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How High Are Chances Of Contracting MRSA? How Is Life After?
My son is currently in a foster home. He is due to return home in the next week. The caregiver has a bad case of MRSA which she has had to go to the hospital almost everyday and have the wound drained, cleaned and dressed. They are also talking surgery. She is also diabetic. I had never heard of this prior to this. Should my husband and I get a nasal swab to see if we are carriers prior to my son coming home? Should my son get tested too? I don't know how many times she has had this but at least more than once. My biggest concern that if my son is colonized how it is going to affect the rest of his life being a carrier. Prior to removal he was in Karate (a contact sport), and we have a pool he loves swimming. He has been in this home about 2 months and has too take numerous visits to the hospital with her. She also has let him use her cell phone. Not sure how to handle this. Thanks for your response.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vidya KR's Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.
MRSA its a strain of s.aureus. s.aureus is normal commensal in a human body. It enters body only through breach in skin or mucous membrane. It causes disease only in those with risk factors like diabetes, immunocompromised, elderly age group. Better to get your son examined by a infection specialist to know weather is he a carrier of infection. If he is a carrier of infection in most of the cases he may not suffer from disease until his immune status is good. Need not to worry there are treatment options available for carrier state.
Hope this helps you.
Regards
