Pain due to heart disease
(usually insufficient blood supply to a portion of the heart muscle) is often described as a crushing sensation or a band around the chest. It may radiate along the left arm, to the jaw or to the shoulder. It is often brought on by exertion and may subside with rest. Sustained pain may indicate a serious problem and you should get to a hospital as soon as you can. Call 911 or the local equivalent.
Pain in the chest may be due to an injury
or infection. It is better localized and may get worse with breathing deeply or movement.
