How Can Thalassemia Be Treated?

my brother is only 5 years old, the doctor recommended for us to make blood smear, and found that he has a low blood count and irregular shape of blood cells. thats what we understand, we are near for our schedule to a pedia hemo specialist, what should we do for now, his doctor said theres a 70% chance that it is thalasemia..

dear mam. just blood counts will not suffice to diagnose thalassemia. good clinical examination is must. lots of causes for low blood counts. if thalassemia. there are trait, minor, internedua and major. kindly get haemoglobin electrophoresis done. that I'll give a clear picture on type of thalassemia. once type s confirmed. treatment can be started. if it's trait nothing s required. if minor n intermedia they require occasional transfusion of blood. if it turns out to be thalassemia in harmoglobin electrophoresis, kindly evalute ur family members as it runs in families n seek a genetic counselling too. thank u
