How Can Severe Lung Infection Be Treated?

My niece has been diagnosed with a severe lung infection . She has never smoked, and her only symptoms have been a slight cough and general tiredness. She lives in another state and has no one to answer my questions. Can you help me? She is 69 and has been in good health for as long as I can remember but is now unresponsive and has been for over a week.
