How Can Post Nasal Drip Be Treated?

I am a woman 75 years old, who is on allergy shots. I've been suffering from post nasal cough for about a month now. My ENT doctor ordered Bactroban spray, sinus cleaning spray & more recently 2 weeks ago & a few days told me to add Musinex to help me. My main problem is not being able to sleep well at night lying down. I get this wheezing noise from my nose & mouth & then wake up coughing. I seem better when upright. Is there anything else you can suggest for me to do or ask my doctor about? I'll try to get back to see him early next week. Thank you, Ruth Young

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

Post nasal drip is a harmless condition but it can cause discomfort to you. It is nothing but excessive mucus production caused by allergies or conditions like sinusitis and deviated nasal septum.
you don't need to worry regarding this as it can be cured effectively once the cause has been found out.
I suggest you to consult an ENT specialist and get the following things done:-
1.A detailed ENT examination is needed to fin d out what causing the problem. It could be sinusitis or deviated nasal septum(DNS). Common cold and allergies can also cause this problem.Investigations like complete blood count and CT scan may be needed to make diagnosis.
2.Antihistamines like levocetrezine would provide symptomatic relief. Newer antihistamines like loratidine is a better choice and side effects are minimal.
3.A short course of antibiotics can be tried empirically.
4.Do steam inhalation and saline nasal irrigation frequently.
5.Mucolytics like N-acetyl cystine(MUCINAC) helps to break the mucus and provide symptomatic relief.
6.You can also try expectorant cough syrup, which helps to clear mucus and secretions.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
