How Can Painful Muscle Spasms Be Treated?

Yes, I have been taking Soma for severe muscle spasms for several years or longer. I usually take two 350 mg, one half at a time throughout the day because I am so afraid of getting a spasm (always in my back). I am concerned because i just found out that it can be addictive. Also, I notice that sometimes my stool is clay colored. If it is addictive how would I best wean myself off of it. And do you have any other more benign remedies for sever muscle spasms. When I get a full blow spasm I take a whole some, lie down and usually fall asleep, When I wake up it is gone. However, I have had several episodes over the years that were brutal. Sever spasm for up to three weeks. Just recently I had the worse spasms ever and they lasted 5 week! I could barely function. The Soma barely gave me relief.
