How Can Pain And Swelling In The Toe Be Treated?

Woke up this morning by falling out of bed and thought I jammed my big toe.Went to Kaiser doctor in afternoon and seen it was swollen around lower toe and very painful. Had x-rays on toe area and nothing showed a break or fracture just some arthritis in joints. Oh yeah I m a 65 yo male with diabetes, also on blood thinner called Xarelto for afib. Nothing was settled other than maybe it was just a jammed big toe on my right foot. The doctor consulted a podiatrist and he mentioned if I ever had gout and I said no. Anyway came home with no resolution to this other than possible jammed right big toe. I looked up gout and this seems to fit my own diagnosis possibly. I took tylenol but this didn t help the pain so I took 1 800 MG ibuprofen and it seems to help with the pain and icing it down helps too! I plan to see a doctor tomorrow for some gout meds as I read there are meds for this condition. Your thoughts doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to gout attack most likely. Blood test for uric acid levels will be helpful to rule out this. I would suggest taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen or colchicine to abort the attack. Once the acute episode subside then you can take uricosuric drugs like allopurinol.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
I find this answer helpful
