How Can Nausea And Abdominal Bloating Be Treated?

Hello. My father has Non-Hodgkin s lymphoma and has not responded to several treatments over the past year. He was given a prognosis of weeks to months and his doctor has prescribed him Morphine 15 mg tab. He is very reluctant to take it, but is very nauseated and bloated. Would taking the Morphine help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I know it can be hard emotionally to care for loved ones in these situations, and it can be challenging medically to know how to best make him comfortable without letting medications side-effects make things worse.

Morphine is often used in palliative care in order to treat pain, but if your father's main problems are nausea and bloating, morphine is not likely to help, and may make things worse, since morphine will often slow the intestines and may cause constipation and more bloating.

For your father's nausea and bloating, a medication like Metoclopramide that stimulates the stomach and intestines and helps with nausea might be a good choice. Another one is Zofran.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
