Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Grandaughter is 25 and is on promacta for low platelets. They tried a steroid first but no luck. If her spleen is not working and the promacta also, does her spleen need to be removed? If her spleen is removed what organ will produce platelets in place of the spleen/
Platelets are produced in the bone marrow (red) from a large cell by name megakaryocyte. Thrombopoietin produced in the kidney and liver regulates platelet production. Spleen only stores platelets, does not produce platelets. Removal of spleen is not going to affect much. The Promacta, helps increase platelets whether spleen is there or not.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
