hi my 13 ye old son has been prescribed 40mg prednizone for larynigitis ?. he is very short of breath and weezing coughing. ttok him to doctor they said chest sounds clear and oxygen seems fine. he suffer from hayfever and asthma but all the inhaler dont seen to work for long not even while at hospital
Symptoms of laryngitis and wheezing seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection mainly chest infection or allergic reaction. Need not to worry. Steam inhalation is very effective for you and also take over the counter antihistamine like benadryl twice a day. Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants. Mast cell stabilizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection. Consult pediatrician without any delay. Doctor may order blood test and throat swab test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents. Doctor may also refer you to chest specialist , who may order sputum test along with chest x-ray. Avoid cold carbonated beverages.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
