How Can I Prevent The Itching Red Bumps On Forearm Caused From A Burn?

When I was a teenager, I got a burn on my forearm from an old iron cord that caught fire. The scar - about the size of a quarter - faded to barely noticeable. I am now 55 yrs old. About 6 or 7 yrs ago, the area of the scar started getting itchy red bumps on it every winter, especially while wearing long sleeves all day. Sometimes the itching is so intense, I scratch it raw in my sleep. What can I do to treat this and also how can I prevent it?

Hi,

If an old scar begins to feel hot or painful, or becomes puffy and red, chances are good that you have an infection. Because scars penetrate several levels of skin and tissue, it is important to get treatment from a local doctor quickly. You may receive a course of antibiotic Tabs or antibiotic ointment to apply.

On rare occasion an old scar may be the site of a new infection. If the scar is cool to the touch and looks healthy topically apply hydrocortisone or clobetasol and use massage to loosen up and reduce scar tissue. If that does not relieve the itch, try an over the counter lotion that contains lidocaine.

The other best option to reduce the itching is to take intralesional steroid injection where the steroid is injected into the scar which helps reducing the inflammatory cell collection which is causing the itching and redness. The injection can be given to you by a trained Dermatologist.
