How Can Hypertension Be Treated?

Recently informed that I may have uncomplicated hypertension. I am seeing my MD in about 4 wks. He wanted to see if I could lose about 5-10 lbs in 2 months before my next appt before starting me on any medications. I understand that low dose diuretics is now recommended for patients in my situation. I do not current take any medications, and would prefer not to start, but I understand the risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart failure which I would prefer not to get. Please recommend a low dose diuretic that my MD my start with low side effects. I am 5 ft 3 in and I currently weigh 160 lbs. No other medical problems. Thank

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
No need to take antihypertensive immediately. You must be under stage 1 hypertension without any risk factors (diabetes, heart diseases).
So weight reduction, diet modification, exercise, salt restriction etc are first needed in your case.
If your blood pressure is under normal limits after weight reduction, you will not need any drugs.
So don't worry much about complications like this stroke, heart attack etc. Focus on weight reduction, avoidance of stress and salt restriction in diet.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
