How Can High Cholesterol Levels Be Treated?

I recently lost 12 lbs on (9% of body weight) on a keto diet. Love the weight loss but it drove my already high cholesterol over 350. I don t want to regain the weight and in fact, would love to lose a bit more but I have to reign in my numbers. Statins are out of the question for me due to negative reactions. What should I do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. As you have opted not to choose 'statins' as the preferred method to reduce cholesterol level, thus I at most can let you know about the natural method:

i. Check with other blood parameters like blood sugar, low thyroid, cholesterol level and sedentary lifestyle as the cause of weight gain.

ii. Remember that starvation is not the right way to lose weight. Take the right type of diet and eat heartily and develop healthy eating habits:

a. Do not eat only 2 large meals a day. It leads to overeating due to hunger. Take snacks in between. It is advisable to eat a heavy breakfast and light lunch and dinner.

b. Keep a quiet and pleasant atmosphere in the dining hall. While eating watching TV, talking, arguments, angry discussions all lead to overeating.

c. Eat slowly. Chewing each bite thoroughly gives a feeling of satiation.

d. Learn to calculate the calories consumed as well as the calories burnt, and maintain the balance every day.

2. Brisk walking for 45 minutes every day, including Yogasanaas and Pranayama which should be learned under expert guidance. Items that actually help are onion, garlic, soya bean, curds of skimmed milk, apple.

3. Consult an Endocrinologist for any hormonal problem and if everything is normal, make an appointment with a Dietitian for a comprehensive diet chart.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Munish Sood
