General & Family Physician 's  Response
Many studies favour use of calcium channel blockers and thiazide diuretics in Aferican-Americans for optimal BP control. It should be kept in mind that hypertensive medications may take 2-3 weeks for exerting their full effects. The second thing is that Losartan can be started 50mg once daily to max 100mg daily. Although you have not mentioned your average BP readings before and after starting Losartan yet you may use 50mg once daily. Summing up the discussion, in my opinion you should start taking Losartan 50mg once daily in morning while monitoring home BP readings for a week. If still suboptimal response then you can safely switch to a calcium channel blocker (Amlodipine 5mg once daily titrated to response).
