General & Family Physician 's  Response
High blood pressure management depends on the blood pressure readings (recorded over several ocassions), age of the patient, any risk factors (like diabetes, ischemic heart disease) and the complications caused by hypertension if any found in the patient. All these parameters guide the treatment plan. For example a 40 year old man with B.P of 145/90 with no other risk factors and no complications due to hypertension may not need any drug to treat hypertension rather can be advised lifestyle and diet plans with regular follow up.
Your friend once diagnosed and treated for hypertension should be reassured and directed medicine compliance, regular exercise, healthy diet and follow up. Hypertension once controlled rarely ends up in any serious complication so he should be reassured at the moment.
