How Can High Blood Pressure Be Treated?

If a 40 year old male has a high blood pressure, what medication is started initially to lower the bp? Diastolic consistently in 90 s. Previous cardiac stress test normal. Hx of father s death by sudden heart attack at age 50. Primary care physician recommended hydrochlorothiazide 12.5. Would this be the best choice? hgt 5.4, weight 135, tried diet control by limiting salt intake, vegetarian and does walking exercises 3x/week. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi welcome to the health care magic

For high blood pressure at this age medication should be started....

I need to know your blood pressure for giving more comment

Four antihypertensive medication commonly used....
1.diuretic (which you have been prescribed)
2.CCB (amlodipine)
3.ACE inhibitors (enalapril)
4.beta blocker

Any one drug from these four group choosen as per patient clinical condition

So regularly take prescribed antihypertensive medication and do exercise also

Check your serum cholesterol, serum LDL, serum HDL, serum random blood sugar etc...

Yearly investigate with Tread mill and EKG

Hope your concern solved

Take care
