How Can Cough And Sore Throat During Pregnacny Be Treated?

Hello Doctor, I m 21 weeks pregnant. I ve had a cough for over 2 weeks, head congestion and some nasal drainage. I have not had a fever or sore throat. The cough has been so bad that I can t catch my breath and at times can t hold my bladder. Sleeping has been limited. I cough for hours before I finally fall asleep. I think it s just a virus, but it seems never ending. I know I m limited on what I can take since I am pregnant. I don t want to put any stress on the baby. Thank you for your help! Mendy Driggs

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query in HealthCareMagic

I have read through your query and I can understand your concern. I would suggest you to try some home remedies if you have not yet made use of:
1. Try to make use of a humidifier in your bedroom, so that it relieves you from your congestion.
2. Get ample amount of rest.
3. Throat lozenges that are may be chewable can be used to provide relief from sore throat which may exacerbate your cough
4. Betadine gargle or warm saline gargle is also another best option.
5. Keep your head a little elevated on the pillow while at rest.
In case you have tried these, I would suggest syrups that contain chlorpheniramine or dextromethorphan can be used as they are considered safe during pregnancy.

If you find that your cough has a particular whooping sound, I would recommend you to consult your doctor for further management.

I hope this helps
Thank you
