How Can Constipation And IBS Be Treated?

Hello, everyone! Over the last 4 months I have been a nervous wreck. I have been to the GI, 10+ ER visits and 3 PCP visits. I have been suffering with constipation for a while now. From May until now, I have been extremely stressed out. I went from weighing 175-176 pounds to 165 now. The GI diagnosed me with IBS because of my symptoms. My PCP diagnosis me with anxiety, stress and constipation. I am constantly checking my weight and anxious everyday. Over the last month i have been running a round like a mad woman. From waking up at 6am, getting the kids and myself ready for wrkband school, dropping them off, speeding to work, working and walking for 8 hours a day, rushing by opn pick up the kids etc. I recently noticed my I lost more weight and my stomach has gotten smaller. I have not been dieting but changed my diet just a little. I stopped drinking sodas over 3 months ago and added more fiber to my diet due to my constipation. I can t understand why the weight lost if I m not dieting. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, constipation should be treted with next remedies such as moving your body, trying a laxative such as fleet phospho-soda, milk of magnesia, or glycerin suppositories. If there won't be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing. In some cases, it may be also a sign of tumors so it should be ruled out if symptoms persist.

As diet remedies, you should look at your diet. If it contains a large amount of carbohydrates that are difficult to digest, try to replace them. Carbohydrates that are easier to digest, such as potatoes, rice, and bananas, are good substitutes. Also, try to eat around 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 larger ones to help your digestive process.

Chew properly to avoid doing anything that may increase the amount of air that you swallow. This includes making sure that you are chewing your food properly, and avoiding chewing gum or smoking. Also, drink some peppermint tea, chamomile tea and ginger. In severe cases, colonoscopy should be done and some medicines recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
