How Can Cold And Cough Be Treated?

I have had a cold, cough, plugged ears for a month. I have seen 2 doctors that say it is viral so did not prescribe antibiotics. Second doctor prescribed Mometasone to try and loosen phlegm but so far no change. I have taken 3 doses of Mucinex along with Tylenol. Is there something else I should be doing as nothing seems to be changing for the better. I m concerned that my hearing might be affected long term. Suggestions?

Hi,

I completely understand that you are worried about your condition. Since you have said that you have cough and congestion for about a month now. This requires complete evaluation to come to the root cause.

I would have considered the following for a patient in my clinic with these conditions:

1) is it accompanied with fever, chills, rigors

2) is there any chest pain

3) is it a productive cough that is with sputum, the color of sputum, blood in sputum.

4) a chest x ray and sputum culture test is recommended.

In your case if all the reports were normal with none of the above symptoms, then I would have prescribed you anti histaminics and decongestants. It would be better for you if you did steam inhalation thrice a day along with salt water gargle twice a day. Drink plenty of water at least 3 to 4 litres a day. You shall be fine soon. Do not worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suhas Chauhan
