How Can Chronic Pain Due To Peripheral Neuropathy Be Treated?

My husband has chronic pain from damaged nerves (peripheral neuropathy) caused by chemical exposure. The first pain management doctor over medicated and the pain management doctor he sees now, we never see. Its always a nurse practitioner. And they don t understand the pain he is in. His PCP isn t much help on referrals. How do we find a pain doctor who can help him?

Hi there,

I understand your frustration, but we need more information from you. It is important which country and region you are from, and how your medical system works. In that way doctors around your area would be able to recommend something.

You are right that he does need a pain doctor (usually an anaesthesiologist with a pain specialisation) that can follow him up long term and tailor his medication. Note that neurologists can also sometimes help with managing neuropathic pain, if you would like to try that route. Other people to consider are psychologists, or alternative routes like an acupuncturist or even a hypnotherapist.

Let us know so that we can help you further.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
