How Can An Infected Wound On The Head Be Treated?

My granddaughter was stuck in the head with a hammer my daughter took her to the ER they cleaned it and put one staple on it. My daughter is now saying that there is yellowish pus oozing out. Should we be concerned or take her back to the ER or will she be alright and have my daughter just watch her and keep the area cleaned??

Hi and I'm really sorry to hear this about your grand daughter..
Welcome to HCM..
I thank you for posting your query here and I'm definitely going to help you out.

I being a surgeon, we encounter so many such cases day in and day out..
I read your question completely and have understood it well enough..

Can I know the age of your granddaughter??
Because in children under 10 years we have to be bit cautious..

Well, I will analyze all your points and provide necessary explanation..

1. She met with a trauma including hammer!
Well, I hope they have given her tetanus vaccine first before doing anything..
If not, please ask for one.

2. She was put one staple..
Well, it might have been a small and simple one.
If it was deep then they would have used suture instead of staple..

3. Yellowish pus oozing! This indicates infection.
How sure are you that it's pus?
In that case please note the following few facts..

A. Pus, in most of the areas should be drained.
Best is to open the staple and give a nice wash.

B. Advise to send that pus for culture and sensitivity test.
To see what organism is responsible for this and the sensitive antibiotics.

C. With this, the infection should subside..

D. If I knew, her age and weight, I would have started her on empirical antibiotic.
It's always beneficial and recommended..

Hope this helps you, in case you need any further assistance, please let me know.
Take care and God bless.
