How Are Sodium Levels Assessed And Treated In An Infant?

My son was born 5 days ago and diagnosed with jaundice requiring treatment which was done successfully. Now the doctor is telling us that my son was dehydrated and has a high sodium count they must treat which they did with an IV. The doctor is reluctant to release him because they want to make sure the sodium level remains at an acceptable level. The highest level was 151 when that began IV treatment, sodium is down to 141. I m tired of seeing my son repeatedly stuck with needles and IVs to check his blood, not to mention how traumatized he must be for the same reason. HOw long does it take to assess sodium levels and treatment. My son has gained his weight back and doing fine breast feeding. Thanks.

Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Normal Sodium levels in serum is 136 to 145 mEq/L. High sodium levels is called hypernatremia. It is controlled to be back to normal by infusion of IV fluids.
But, it needs to be assessed what would be the root cause for increased sodium levels along with jaundice in newborn, as some of the inborn errors of metabolism would present like this.
Once those disorders are ruled out and sodium levels are controlled to be in normal limits, he would be discharged.
