Hit On The Upper Left Thigh, Intense Swelling And Hardness. How Would One Know Whether Its A Blood Clot?

I fell last 8 days ago through my deck & really hit hard on my upper left thigh. Went to emergency room, they xrayed & said there was not fractures . Just major swelling , put me on crutches & pain meds. Leg has gone down some, however, where it hit the hardest is is very hard and swollen. I can put some weight on it it just seems to be taking forever to go down. How would you know if you had a blod clot? YYYY@YYYY

Dear friend, welcome and thanks for entrusting your query here at HCM !

Good to read that there is no fracture.
Then there is not much worry.
You could be right in thinking of a bleed (hematoma )in the muscle there. It takes weeks to get reabsorbed and organised.
So the hardness you can feel.

One can see for a hematoma on an ultrasound of the thigh.
If you are too much concerned, you can be sure with an ultrasound. You can continue with OTC pain killers.

I hope you are fully satisfied with the guidance I gave.
I would be glad to answer any further queries.
Thank you and Good luck !

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The swelling you have seems to be due to a haematoma due to a soft tissue injury. A blood clot is commonly associated with pain on walking. You can confirm this by color doppler scan.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
