Hip Replacement Surgery Done. What Precautions Should Be Taken During Intimate Moments?

I recently had hip replacement almost at 7 weeks and am greatly concerned about intimacy and my husband. All these medical terms about turns and angles are extremely confusing. So basically and please excuse my frankness but I don t know any other term to use.... can you wrap your legs, can you extend them straight in the air. This is a definite issue that is not addressed to patients except to be careful which in all reality does not provide any information or guidance for those of us that are young, married, and still want to have a relationship but protect the joint also. Any information would be tremendously appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for posting your query.

I can understand your concern regarding sexual relationship after THR. 6 weeks are already passed after THR , so you can resume sexual relations with some precations.
Precautions include:
Avoid bending at the hip more than 90 degrees
Avoid moving the operative leg across the midline of the body
Avoid rotating the toes of the operative leg inward

You should initially take a passive role, assuming positions that are as natural and relaxed as possible.
During sexual relations, your partner can help you stay within a safe range of motion, control the amount and speed of movement, and avoid putting full weight on your hips.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
