High BP, Low Heart Rate. Taking Lisinospril. Does High BP Cause Low Heart Rate?

At a routine office visit I was told I have elevated blood pressure and was put on a low dose (5 mg.) of lisinopril Today I went for a colonoscopy and was told I have a low heart rate (39-42) I've put a call into my doctor but wonder how concerned I should be. Other than occasionally being tired I feel fine. What gives? High blood pressure plus low heart rate..

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

The two are unlikely to be related in your case...

Sudden rise of pressure usually slows the rate / but such situations are not common and have other symptoms and signs...
Your rate is quite slow – the most common cause for such slow rates is Complete Atrioventricular Block (‘Heart Block’ – in common parlance.). You should see your cardiologist / as soon as possible / You will need more investigations / You may even need a pacemaker...

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

General & Family Physician Dr. Shekhar Deo's  Response
Hi, Welcome to HCM,

Physiologically, when your blood pressure increases the heart rate decreases due to arterial baroreflex function. However, 39 to 42 beats per minute is pretty low heart rate that requires attention. In this regard I will advise you to consult your cardiologist and get your condition examined.

It might very well be that Lisinopril might be the cause unless proved otherwise. Other causes being electrolyte imbalance (high blood potassium levels), hypothyroidism, any cause that causes imbalance in the electrical activity of the heart such as coronary heart disease. These are just some of the causes of low heart rate.

Hope this helps.
