Having Tickling Sensation In Throat Which Leads To Gagging, Gasping For Breath, vomiting Sensation. Eases After Forced Cough. Remedy?

Sometimes, without even eating or drinking, I get what feels like a tickle in the back of my throat , A coughing gag follows without being able to breathe. As I try to gasp for air, the sound is like trying to take air back into a small leak with a choking squeaking sound. After one of two forced coughs and the gagging starts there is a choking sound like one is going to vomit , but there is nothing to vomit and kind of burping sound follows. Eventually, my breathing takes in more and more air as everything begins to relax. It feels like something has gone down the windpipe or esophagus , but there has been no obstruction of food. I have a feeling it is the saliva . It occurred while sleeping when I was heavier, but now I am older and it can occur while seated or drinking a little bit of water.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome HCM.
I have gone through your query. Based on the information provided, all the symptoms you have been experiencing go in favor of Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease.

It is due to the defect in esophageal sphincter mechanism, hyperacidity or decreased GI motility.
The tingling sensation you have been experiencing is due to the reflux which causes acid to enter the throat. As soon as the acid touches the throat, the natural reflex phenomenon causes airway to close( the airway will be closed when the esophagus is opened) resulting in gasping.

The burping completes the reflux process and after that esophagus closes and you are able to breath.

You need not worry. Using Proton pump Inhibitors( reduces acid in stomach) Like Pantaprazole or Omeprazole in combinatiojn with a prekinetic agent like Domperidone ( to be taken one hour before break fast once a day) should help you. You might have to use these medicines for 1-2 months depending on the severity of your condition. It will take 5 days for response to show.

Coming to the diet front- Avoid spicy diet, alcohol and smoking and hot diary products.

Hope you got the answer you were looking for.
Wish you a speedy recovery.
