Having Severe Joint Pain, Fever, Swollen Finger. Blood Test Done, Tested For Gout And Rheumatoid Arthritis

I have a 21 year old son who has severe joint pain. Gets fevers about every night. Has insomnia , swelling in fingers, toes and wrists. Doctors have taken blood tests but have not been diagnosed. This is very frustrating as he is literally hunched over walking and awkward with his arms and legs. He was just tested for gout and rheumatoid arthritis - waiting on those results. But he is in pain to move. He does not use drugs or smoke or drink and is generally a healthy young man. Any help would be appreciated.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
It sounds like you are pursuing the right course of action. In the meantime he should aim to remain mobile and active. Swimming is a good activity. He could also start on an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen regularly if he has no other contraindications to this. He should have X-rays of his involved joints if he has not done so already and occasionally an MRI scan with gadolinium can be of benefit. In cases when the diagnosis is not clear occasionally we will biopsy the joint lining of one of the involved joint.
