Having Pain And Uncomfortable Feeling In Tail Bone. Is This Due To Tear In Tissue?

Hi today after work I realized my tailbone was hurting and uncomfortable. So I looked it up because I haven't hurt it in a long time. I saw something about a person lifting weights and lifted something to heavy and they tore a tissue in there tailbone. I lifted some boxes today that were heavy and I was straining. Could I have torn a tissue?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Pain occuring in and around the tail bone area is termed as COCCYDYNIA. This condition is caused by an injury or stress that affects the tailbone, as well as the muscles and nerves surrounding it.

Please follow these measures for your pain relief,

* Lean forward while sitting down
* Sit completely upright with proper posture — keeping your back firmly against the chair, knees level with your hips, feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed
* Sit on a doughnut-shaped pillow or wedge (V-shaped) cushion
* Apply heat or ice to the affected area
*Physical therapy involving strengthening of pelvic area muscles , stimulation with ultrasound therapy might be helpful
* Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil)

If your symptoms are getting relieved with the above measures, consult your family physician for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
